A flawless appearance does not guarantee a sound interior.
A hidden defect at the hook root or curved transition can initiate a load-bearing failure.
A precision hardware casting company mass-produces small metal latches, connecting hooks, and fastening components for luggage hardware, tie-down straps, tool hangers, and compact connection mechanisms. The parts are small and high-volume, yet their hook roots and joints must withstand repeated tensile loads and impact.
1 Polishing or plating produced an excellent surface finish, but internal porosity, shrinkage porosity, and cracks remained invisible.
2 The hook root, curved transitions, and wall-thickness changes concentrated stress and were also the most defect-prone areas.
3 At a single projection angle, overlapping upper and lower structures could obscure fine defects.
4 Destructive tensile tests were limited to sampling and scrapped the tested parts.
5 Defects discovered only after plating or assembly increased rework costs.
Based on the hook geometry, root thickness, and critical load-bearing areas, we supplied a five-axis C-arm rotary cabinet X-ray system with a multi-cavity positioning fixture and automated multi-angle inspection program.

Five-axis imaging
Multiple angles around the hook root. |
After implementation, the customer could inspect multiple hooks in one fixture from several angles without damaging them.
✓ Defects identified before polishing, plating, and assembly.
✓ Multi-cavity fixture improved batch coverage.
✓ Fixed angles improved image consistency.
"Previously, visual inspection revealed nothing and we had to rely on sampled tensile tests. Now we can identify porosity or cracks inside the hook root before plating, and the multi-cavity fixture makes batch inspection practical."
